Flexible resource project

Fingrid is planning a flexible resource project in cooperation with Estonia’s transmission system operator Elering and Åland’s transmission system operator Kraftnät Åland with the aim of promoting the large-scale utilisation of the flexibility provided by distributed decentralised resources locally, nationally, between Finland and Åland as well as between Finland and Estonia.

The aim of the project is to investigate the utilisation of the opportunities provided by flexible resources in as versatile a way as possible for the different usage needs of electricity transmission and distribution networks as well as customers. The efficient utilisation of flexible resources across national borders with high-voltage direct current transmission links will be explored at the same time.

On the beginning of 2020, the project has received the status of the European Commission's Smart Grid Projects of Common Interest (PCI).

Preparations for the flexible resource project have been suspended in spring 2020. Of the subsystems planned for the project, especially flexibility market platforms require further research. Research will continue as part of two R&D projects co-funded by the European Commission: the INTERRFACE project, which started in 2019 and the OneNet project, which received funding in October 2020.
