Electricity-saving measures continued in November – the operation of the power system support procedure starts

People in Finland continued using electricity sparingly in November. Registrations from companies and public-sector actors for Fingrid’s new voluntary power system support procedure have got off to a good start. The procedure began operating today, on 1 December, and more operators are expected to get involved.

Finland chalked up another excellent energy-saving result, as electricity consumption in November was down nine per cent year-on-year in Finland, according to Fingrid’s preliminary measurements. This figure is not adjusted for temperature. The average temperature weighted by electricity consumption in November corresponded to the realised figure in November last year.

Power system support procedure introduced

Fingrid has developed a new voluntary power system support procedure with the aim of tapping the potential flexibility available outside the balancing power market to avoid power cuts in the winter of 2022–2023. The procedure entered in operation on 1 December.

About ten operators had registered for the power system support procedure by the end of November, so the combined maximum flexibility capacity is approximately 200 MW. The parties involved are companies and public sector actors, and flexibility will be realised by reducing consumption and increasing production – for example, by starting up reserve power engines.

Fingrid would like to thank Finnish operators for their widespread interest in supporting the power system. “We expect several hundred more megawatts of registrations in the coming weeks, so the maximum power could correspond to one of the units at the Loviisa nuclear power plant,” says Laura Ihamäki, Advisor at Fingrid. The amount of voluntary support for the power system can be monitored via the NordPool electricity exchange urgent market messages, where Fingrid announces the latest figures.

We will hold another webinar about the power system support procedure from 10 am to 11 am on Friday 9 December 2022 (in Finnish). There is no need to register for the webinar. For further information about the power system support procedure and how to contribute, see Fingrid’s website (in Finnish).
