Fenno-Skan submarine cable again available to the market in mid-February

Fingrid Oyj and Nexans Norway AS signed an agreement on the repair of the Fenno-Skan submarine cable between Finland and Sweden. In accordance with the specified repair schedule, the cable will be taken into use again by 15 February 2007.The vessel used in the repair is the Polar Prince, which can also operate in severe sea conditions. However, the duration of repair work is crucially influenced by the wind and ice conditions in the area. The submarine cable has now been cut, and preliminary preparatory work for diving and repair is presently in progress at the site. The breakdown point has been localized and removed from the subsea cable. The transfer of the cable to a new route, which was planned initially, turned out to be impossible, so it was decided to keep the cable on the former route. The new route would have enabled the use of a single joint, whereby the necessary repair time would have been more than one week shorter. However, in view of system security and technical reasons, the submarine cable will be kept on its present route. Pictures Further information:
