New substation for the national grid in Eastern Finland

Substation to be built near Mikkeli will improve operational reliability. Fingrid Oyj will build a new 400/110/20 kilovolt (kV) substation at Visulahti near Mikkeli in Eastern Finland. The transformer at the substation will feed the 110 kV network in the Mikkeli region, and the substation will improve the operational reliability of the Finnish grid. The contract concerning the building work has been signed with Empower Oy.Building work at the substation site situated approx. 10 kilometres north-east of Mikkeli will begin in October. The building of a road leading to the substation area will commence before this. The new substation will have 400/110 kV transformation, 400 kV and 110 kV switchgear and a control building. The transmission lines passing the substation area will be diverted to the station, and the lines will be provided with modifications and reinforcements required by the project.

The project was subjected to competition in accordance with the EU's notification rules through an open procedure. Empower Oy will carry out the project on a turn-key basis. The contract covers engineering and building work, installations, testing and commissioning as well as purchases of all other equipment and supplies with the exception of the main transformer. The total price of the contract is approx. 4.5 million euro. Fingrid has ordered the 400 MVA main transformer for the substation from ABB Oy. The transmission line arrangements relating to the project will also be ordered separately.

The new substation will be complete in October 2004.
