Fingrid modernising its reserve power plants

Control systems of five gas turbine plants renewed. Fingrid Oyj, which is responsible for the national electricity transmission grid in Finland, will modernise part of its reserve power plants. A contract was signed yesterday with ABB Oy concerning the modernisation of control systems at five gas turbine plants. The total costs of the project amount to approx. 3 million euro. ​The gas turbine plants in question were built in the 1970s. Due to the characteristically little use of reserve power plants and their regular maintenance, the main machinery at the plants is still in good condition. The renewal of technically outdated control systems will prolong the technical and economic lifetime of the machinery by some 20 years. At the same time, the maintenance, condition monitoring and disturbance tracking of the plants are improved and facilitated.

The project covers the renewal of most of the automation, control, protection, regulating and monitoring systems at the power plants. The supplier responsible for the total deliveries in the project extending until the end of 2004 is ABB Oy, which will also provide most of the related equipment.

Fingrid Varavoima Oy, subsidiary of Fingrid Oyj, owns and maintains reserve power capacity for the short-term reserve power needs emerging in the power system. Fingrid has rapidly-starting gas turbine plants fired with light fuel oil in different parts of Finland, having a total power of approx. 670 MW.
