Transmission line between Viipuri and Kymi ready

Electricity transmission capacity from Russia to Finland up by 40 per cent. The new 400 kilovolt (kV) electricity transmission line between Viipuri in Russia and Kymi near Kotka in Finland is now ready and commissioned. The new connection increases the electricity transmission capacity between Finland and Russia by 400 megawatts (MW), i.e. by 40 per cent. This transmission capacity will be made available for commercial use as of the beginning of next year. ​The length of the new connection on the Finnish side of the border is approximately 90 kilometres and in Russia 45 kilometres. In Finland, the building project has been managed by Fingrid Oyj, which is responsible for the main electricity transmission grid in Finland, and RAO EES Rossii has been responsible for the building project in Russia. In addition to the transmission line, the project encompassed the building of the Kymi substation. Fingrid's costs for this project were approximately EUR 17 million.

The additional capacity will be brought to commercial use on 1 January 2003. The electricity market parties were able to make reservations concerning this capacity until the end of October. The volume of reservations exceeded clearly the available capacity. Fingrid will confirm the transmission reservations after receiving from the Russian counterparty an account of corresponding reservations on the transmission connection in Russia.
