Fingrid to expand the Keminmaa substation

Fingrid Oyj, which is responsible for the national electricity transmission grid in Finland, will expand its Keminmaa substation in Northern Finland. The main contractor in the renovation project costing approx. 2.8 million euro is Fortum Service Oy. The building project will be ready towards the end of 2004.The Keminmaa 400/110/20 kilovolt (kV) substation is an important link in the transmission connection to and from Sweden, and it also feeds electricity to AvestaPolarit Stainless Oy's Tornio steel mill. The expansion will secure electricity supply in the Tornionjokilaakso region and to mills located in the region.

The substation will have a new 400 MVA main transformer and related switchyards and secondary systems. At the same time, there will be transmission line rearrangements on the Sellee 400 kV line and on the 110 kV back-up connection. A light transfer loading station will be built for the transport of the transformer at the Laurila halt, and the road used for transporting the transformer will be improved.

The project was subjected to competition in accordance with the EU's notification rules through an open procedure. Fingrid has ordered the main transformer for the substation from ABB Oy.

Earthwork at the substation will begin next spring and actual installation work in the summer of 2004. The substation will be commissioned in stages so that the expansion will be taken into full use in November 2004. During the building work, there will be heavier than normal truck and machinery traffic in the area.
