Prospects for future electricity production and consumption Q3 2025
Fingrid has updated the electricity production and consumption forecasts used in the planning of the transmission grid in autumn 2025. The Finnish electricity system is in the midst of a major transformation, with demand for clean electricity growing rapidly and production increasingly shifting to weather-dependent electricity production. Fingrid's forecast describes the development of electricity consumption and production until 2035 in two scenarios, which are distinguished by Finland's competitiveness in attracting electricity-intensive investments. The growth in electricity consumption is based primarily on the growth in industrial electricity use, where Finland's competitiveness is key. The growth in electricity production is mainly in line with the growth in consumption, but in the lower consumption growth scenario, somewhat more electricity is directed towards exports. The growth in electricity production will come mainly from wind and solar power.
Fingrid's Q3/2025 forecast is part of the main grid development plan and examines developments until 2035 in two scenarios: Excellent competitiveness and Moderate competitiveness, which differ in Finland's ability to attract electricity-intensive investments.
- Electricity consumption will increase from the current approximately 83 TWh to 103–123 TWh by 2030 and 104–159 TWh by 2035. The largest growth will come from data centers, hydrogen and e-fuel production, and other industries, but heating and transport will also be electrified.
- Electricity production will increase to 108–122 TWh by 2030 and 120–169 TWh by 2035. Wind power is the growth driver, and solar power is also expected to grow strongly. Thermal power generation will decrease, nuclear power generation will increase due to capacity upgrades, and hydropower generation will remain at the current level in both scenarios.
The higher scenario of the forecast serves as the basis for main grid planning. The drivers, uncertainty factors and preparation methods of the forecast are described in more detail in the forecast report.
