Example of balance calculation

Example of balance calculation. The example concerns a balance responsible party whose actual production 60 MWh, actual consumption -40 MWh, and sales to day ahead market -30 MWh.

An example calculation of imbalance. The initial data in the example includes a balance responsible party whose realized production during the balance settlement period is 60 MWh, realized consumption is -40 MWh, and day-ahead market sales are -30 MWh.

Composition of balance

  • actual production total 60 MWh
  • sales to day ahead market -30 MWh
  • actual consumption total -40 MWh

The balance responsible party’s balance deviation (imbalance) is a deficit of -10 MWh. In order to cover this, Fingrid will sell balance energy to the balance responsible party at the sales price of imbalance energy.

On May 22, 2023, the 15-minute balance settlement period was introduced instead of the 60-minute balance settlement period.

Prices of imbalance energy

The purchase and sales price of imbalance energy are determined as shown in the table below.

On May 22, 2023, the 15-minute balance settlement period was introduced, with the balance deviation price being the same for each quarter of the hour. The imbalancepricing for the fifteen-minute balance deviation will be implemented on March 19, 2025, at 01:00, when the mFRR regulation prices will be determined based on 15 minutes, and intraday cross-border trading in the Nordics will shift to a 15-minute resolution.

Additionally, the balance responsible party pays the volume fee for the hourly net balance deviation (starting from June 2025, the volume fee for the balance deviation will apply to the 15-minute balance deviation when the day-ahead market transitions to 15-minute trading).
