Fingrid to modernise the Isohaara substation in Lapland

Fingrid will modernise the Isohaara substation built in 1980. This investment secures the electricity supply of both the local industry and residents of the city of Tornio and its surrounding areas Sea Lapland and Northern Ostrobothnia.

The Isohaara substation is located in Keminmaa next to the renowned Isohaara hydro power plant. Ownership of the substation and its 110 kV switching station was transferred to Fingrid in 2012. “The investment is important for the power system security of the area, since the station supplies power to one of Europe’s largest paper and cardboard mills, Stora Enso’s Veitsiluoto mill. The substation also supplies power to the Metsä Fibre’s Kemi pulp mill and the city of Tornio,” says Timo Kiiveri, Fingrid’s Director of Asset Management.

The substation has two northbound 110 kV main grid transmission lines running to the Keminmaa substation and one southbound 110 kV connection to the Raasakka substation. As part of the currently made investment decision, Fingrid will modernise the towers of these transmission lines to improve the security of electricity supply. The total value of the investment is approximately EUR 12 million.

This represents a major modernisation project which is expected to be completed in 2023 for the substation and the towers of the northbound lines. For the southbound transmission line towers, the project will complete in 2024.
