Fingrid prepares to connect wind power in the areas of Haapajärvi and Teuva

The clean power system of the future will require new main grid investments to enable the grid’s optimal functioning. As part of the reinforcements necessary for the connection of wind power, Fingrid has made investment decisions on the construction of the Pysäysperä substation planned for the municipality of Haapajärvi and on the construction of the Kärppiö substation planned for the municipality of Teuva. The total investment costs of these projects are approximately EUR 55 million.

More than 1,000 MW of wind power projects are being planned for Haapajärvi and its neighbouring municipalities. A pumped storage power plant project of 50–75 MW is also being developed in the area. A new 400/110 kV substation will be built in the area to enable the connection of these projects to the grid. The substation will connect the 400 kV Metsälinja transmission line, slated for completion in 2022, as well as the area’s 110 kV distribution network and main grid transmission lines to the grid. The substation will have two 400 MVA main transformers to direct the area’s production surplus to the Metsälinja and on to consumers.

The investment includes a substation project and line arrangements in the surrounding area to connect transmission lines to the new station. The substation is planned to go live in summer 2022.

The construction of 4,000 MW of wind power is also being planned for the area between Kristiinankaupunki, Vaasa and Seinäjoki. Connecting these wind power projects to the grid will require development of the main grid. Approximately 1,000 MW of the wind power can be connected to the grid by building a new 400/110 kV transformer substation in Kärppiö. The new Kärppiö transformer substation will be built in the proximity of the existing and planned wind power projects in Teuva. The project will be completed in the summer or autumn of 2022.
