Major changes to the Seinäjoki substation to accommodate the growth in wind power

Fingrid is refurbishing the ageing Seinäjoki 110 kV switchgear built in the 1980s. At the same time, there will be better opportunities for connecting wind power. A second main transformer will be added in Seinäjoki due to the significant growth in wind power construction in South Ostrobothnia.

Fingrid is building a new gas-insulated switchgear installation in Seinäjoki and demolishing the existing air-insulated switchgear, which has reached the end of its service life. The construction of hundreds of megawatts of wind power output is planned in the region around Seinäjoki. Connecting the planned wind power plants to the main grid will require a second main transformer to be added in Seinäjoki in order to ensure good system security in the main grid.

The refurbishment of the Seinäjoki substation is a large investment for Fingrid, with a total expense of approximately EUR 24 million. Refurbishment work will begin at the Seinäjoki substation in spring 2022, and the new station will be completed in 2024.

Substation construction is currently happening at a brisk pace, as old substations must be modernised in various parts of Finland and the increase in wind power output also requires entirely new substations to be built. Fingrid’s investments enable the construction of wind power, thereby contributing to Finland’s objective of becoming carbon-neutral by 2035.
