Tampereen Sähköverkko, Elenia, and Fingrid will jointly improve the electricity network in Tampere area

Electricity production in the city of Tampere is decreasing. However, the region's electricity consumption is rising as the city's attractiveness increases the growth of the area. Electricity network company Tampereen Sähköverkko (TSV) has, together with Elenia and the transmission system operator Fingrid, drawn up a plan for the improvement of the electricity network, which will result in a 110 kV transmission line being built up in Tampere, corresponding to the demand for electricity in the region.

The solution created in co-operation by the three companies is cost-effective and also of minimal environmental impact. The old transmission line from the 1950s will be replaced with a modern solution, resulting in a doubling of the power transfer capacity of the transmission line. The route of the old transmission line will be utilised in the positioning of the new line, whereby the environmental impact and visibility of the transmission line will remain almost unchanged. A transmission line will be built on a new route between Sulkavuori, the Tampere bypass, and the Helsinki motorway.

The three parts of the project

The project consists of three sections. TSV will build two separate lines from Lahdesjärvi to Rautaharkko substation as part of the first one. The second section is the construction of a 10-kilometre double line between Lentola and Lahdesjärvi. The poles and one of the transmission lines running between the poles will be owned by Fingrid and the other line by TSV. Fingrid will further sell the parallel Lentola–Lahdesjärvi transmission line to TSV. In the third part, the old transmission line of the electricity network company Elenia, reaching from Kangasala substation via Kyötikkälä to Lentola, will be replaced by a double line, with one transmission line to TSV’s and the other for Elenia's use.

As a result, two independent transmission lines will be generated to TSV, reaching from the Kangasala substation to the Rautaharkko substation. A new, better-capacity transmission line will be built for Elenia for the distribution of electricity from the Vatiala and Herttuala substations, replacing the old line. The capacity of the Fingrid transmission line will remain unchanged, but the line will be moved into the new structure.

The total cost of the project is approximately EUR 9 million. The main contractor for the project is Vattenfall Services Nordic Ltd. The new 110 kV transmission line will be built between 2019 and 2020 and is expected to be completed in 2020.
