Significant investments in the main grid

The main grid is being developed to meet the needs of the future power system. Today, on 16 August, contracts were signed for the Forest Line project and the modernisation of the electric network in the Oulujoki area. The Forest Line will significantly increase the north-south transmission capacity of the main grid and contribute to Finland remaining a single price area in electricity trade. The electric network in the Oulujoki area, which was built in the 1950s and is nearing the end of its service life, will be renewed during the years 2019–2023.

Fingrid’s 400-kilovolt transmission connection, called the Forest Line, will significantly increase the north-south electricity transmission capacity in Finland. The transmission connection will contribute to Finland remaining a single price area and enable the integration of cleanly produced energy into the main grid. The Forest Line, which is about 300 kilometres in length, will be built in place of the current power lines or alongside them, running from Petäjävesi via Haapavesi to Muhos. The Forest Line has been divided into several sections. Destia Ltd was selected to implement two of these, and the contract for the projects was signed today.

The Forest Line includes several substation projects that are being built separately from each other. The Pyhäselkä substation located at the northern end of the Forest Line will, for its part, ensure the functioning of the Forest Line. In addition to the substation in Pyhäselkä, Fingrid is developing the electric network in the Oulujoki area, which was built in the 1950s and is nearing the end of its service life, with a new substation. The renewal of the electric network will be carried out during the years 2019–2023. Omexom (Infratek Finland Oy) was selected as the main contractor for the Pyhäselkä substation (electrical system deliveries), and Fingrid signed a contract with the company today.

“These signed, significant contracts with our partners form a robust backbone for the development of the main grid as part of the Forest Line project. Our investment level continues to be high at over EUR 100 million annually”, says Timo Kiiveri, Senior Vice President, Asset Management at Fingrid.
