Fingrid strengthens the transmission grid in Eastern Finland by renewing substations in Lieksa and Nurmes
Fingrid is strengthening the transmission grid in North Karelia by renewing its substations located in Lieksa and Nurmes. The renewal of these substations will maintain the already high reliability of the transmission grid and improve the connectivity of planned investments in the area to the grid. The investment costs of these projects are approximately ten million euros.
In recent years, several significant investments have been made in the Eastern Finland region to strengthen the transmission grid. As part of the systematic development of the grid in North Karelia, Fingrid is renewing its substations in Lieksa and Nurmes. The estimated investment costs for these substation projects total about ten million euros, and they are expected to be completed in 2028.
“Investments in substations are part of our long-term work to develop the transmission grid. In North Karelia, significant investments have been made in the grid in recent years to ensure that customers in the area will continue to receive reliable electricity in the future,” says Fingrid’s Executive Vice President, Timo Kiiveri.
Grid development enables investments in Eastern Finland
Fingrid has planned to invest 5.2 billion euros in the transmission grid over the next ten years. Each investment strengthens electricity transmission and improves the possibilities for connecting future electricity consumption and production investments to the grid. Numerous projects have also been implemented in North Karelia in recent years, laying the foundation for ongoing and future development projects. The realized investment costs for these projects in the area have totalled about forty million euros.
As part of grid development in Eastern Finland, Fingrid is constructing a new 400 + 110 kilovolt transmission line between Vaala and Joroinen to strengthen the Lake Line, which will be fully completed next autumn. Once finished, the project will be a significant reinforcement to the transmission grid and will improve the connection possibilities for planned renewable energy investments and related industrial investments in Eastern Finland.
Similar investments and development projects are being carried out across Finland. The maintenance and development of the transmission grid is a nationwide, long-term effort aimed at ensuring the security of electricity supply and the quality of electricity throughout the country.
