Fingrid improves connection planning and information flow
Fingrid is introducing a new procedure to improve the flow of information on network connection plans. The aim of the procedure is to improve the connectivity of the network. In the future, Fingrid will collect information on all planned network connections so that there are common, fair principles for agreeing on connections. The procedure will initially be introduced in southern Finland and will apply to large consumption and electricity storage connections for distribution network companies in the region and for industrial customers directly connected to the grid.
"The new procedure will provide Fingrid with information on the electricity consumption behaviour of new connecting parties and the growth of electricity consumption in the coming years. This will help us to calculate the available capacity in the grid for the coming years more accurately and enable as many new connecting parties as possible, both in the grid and in the distribution networks," says Jussi Jyrinsalo, Senior Vice President at Fingrid.
With the energy transition, electricity consumption in Finland has grown rapidly, while regionally controllable generation is being phased out of cities. The change is challenging electricity networks and there may be temporary shortages of capacity in some areas, both in the transmission grid and the distribution networks. Last January, Fingrid announced temporary, local restrictions on the connection of new industrial consumption to the grid in southern Finland. The situation will improve with the completion of investments to reinforce the grid in 2027.
In order to better anticipate future electricity network connection needs, Fingrid will start to collect more detailed information on large connections planned through distribution network companies. This will also improve the fairness of the connection process. Fingrid is now introducing a new procedure for distribution network companies and industry directly connected to the grid for enquiries about connection contracts.
The new procedure has been designed on the basis of workshops held with Fingrid's customers and the Energy Authority in the spring. The actual requirements for connecting to the network remain unchanged. According to the procedure, approval must be sought from Fingrid for a connection contract for new consumption or grid electricity storage or for an increase in the capacity of an existing connection contract. The procedure will initially apply to consumption connections of over 2-10 megawatts and electricity storage connections of over 1-5 megawatts in southern Finland.
