Fingrid and Svenska kraftnät initiate planning for Fenno-Skan 3 submarine cable between Finland and Sweden
The capacity of the Fenno-Skan 3 is estimated to be 800 megawatts. The new connection is expected to be completed by 2038.
The Finnish and Swedish transmission system operators Fingrid and Svenska kraftnät signed a Letter of Intent in which the TSOs agreed to launch the planning of the third submarine cable connection between Finland and Sweden, Fenno-Skan 3. The capacity of the Fenno-Skan 3 is estimated to be 800 megawatts (MW). The new connection is expected to be completed by 2038.
There are currently two high-voltage direct current transmission links between Finland and Sweden; Fenno-Skan 1, completed in 1989, and Fenno-Skan 2, completed in 2011, with a combined transmission capacity of 1200 megawatts. Fenno-Skan 3 is planned to replace the Fenno-Skan 1 connection at the end of its operational lifetime in the late 2030s, bringing the new total capacity to 1600 MW.
Fingrid is also currently building the new Aurora Line electricity transmission connection between Finland and northern Sweden. The connection will be fully completed in 2025. There are also planning going on to build a fourth interconnector with Sweden, Aurora Line 2, in the early 2030s.
