OL3 System protection agreements for Olkiluoto 3 extended

The agreements related to the industrial consumption participating to OL3 system protection for the Olkiluoto 3 nuclear power plant, which Fingrid has implemented jointly with Teollisuuden Voima, have been extended until the end of 2022. The agreements were originally due to expire at the end of April 2021. The decision was taken to extend the validity of the agreements due to the delay in commissioning Olkiluoto 3. The other terms and conditions of the agreements are unchanged.

OL3 system protection is a technical system that limits the impact of Olkiluoto 3 on the power system in the event of unforeseen faults. OL3 system protection rapidly disconnects industrial electricity consumption if Olkiluoto 3 is disconnected from the grid. The industrial consumption included in OL3 system protection was acquired through a competitive tendering procedure in 2017. Duplicated data communication connections from Olkiluoto to the industrial sites ensure that OL3 system protection functions correctly and very rapidly.

Fingrid and Teollisuuden Voima have begun preparing a tendering process for sites to be included in the next OL3 system protection term, which begins on 1 January 2023.
