Fingrid and Vattenfall Services Nordic Oy signed an agreement worth 8.8 million euros concerning the renewal of the power line between Kouvola and Lappeenranta

The power line, constructed in the 1920's, will be renewed to fulfil current electricity transmission needs and technical requirements. The power line route to be renewed is around 82 kilometres in length and located in the municipalities of Kouvola, Luumäki and Lappeenranta. Construction work is scheduled for 2017–2018.

The current Koria–Yllikkälä 110 kV power line between Koria in Kouvola and Yllikkälä in Lappeenranta will be dismantled and replaced by a new line. Construction will commence in early 2017 and be completed in late 2018. Vattenfall Services Nordic Oy will be the main contractor in the project, and the value of the agreement signed on 22 November 2016 is around 8.8 million euros.

The length of the power line to be renewed is around 82 kilometres, and it is part of the historical Rautarouva (Iron Lady) power line. Rautarouva, constructed in the 1920s, is the oldest section of the Finnish main grid and the first commissioned by the State of Finland. Rautarouva transmitted electricity from the Imatra hydropower plant to Vyborg and to Turku via Hikiä, and from Hikiä to Helsinki.

So far, Fingrid has renewed around 300 kilometres of the nearly 90-year-old Rautarouva line, and the remaining 120 kilometres will be renewed by 2020. The total costs of the renewal are approximately 135 million euros.
