An environmental impact assessment is under way on the transmission lines needed for the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant

Finland's transmission system operator Fingrid is preparing to reinforce the electricity transmission grid for the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant. An environmental impact assessment programme dealing with the transmission lines has been submitted to the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in Northern Ostrobothnia. The environmental impact assessment work supports transmission line planning and will be completed in 2016.
Fennovoima Oy is planning the Hanhikivi 1 nuclear power plant in Pyhäjoki, Northern Ostrobothnia. Fingrid Oyj has investigated the options for connecting the nuclear power plant to the main grid and the need to reinforce the main grid overall, and has also taken future electricity transmission needs into consideration. The Hanhikivi nuclear power plant must be connected to the power system so that the connection allows for the plant's safe operation and the plant is able to feed the electrical energy it produces into the grid in the planned manner in all circumstances.

Preparations are being made for the construction of a 400 kilovolt transmission line connection from the plant on the Hanhikivi peninsula to Lumimetsä in Raahe. In addition, a 110 kilovolt transmission line connection is also needed from the plant to Keskikylä in Pyhäjoki, and on from Keskikylä to Jylkkä (Kalajoki). Some of the transmission lines under assessment will be Fennovoima's connection lines and others will be part of Fingrid's
main grid.

Fingrid and Fennovoima will make decisions on the construction of transmission lines later on as Fennovoima's nuclear power plant project progresses. Construction of the transmission lines is estimated to last 2-3 years.

Environmental investigations provide information for transmission line planning

The statutory environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure will be applied to the transmission line project. The information provided by the EIA procedure and feedback can help to further specify the transmission lines' routes. The transmission lines will be situated in Pyhäjoki, Raahe, Merijärvi and Kalajoki.

The completed environmental impact assessment programme sets out how environmental impacts will be investigated. The assessment programme has been submitted to the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in Northern Ostrobothnia, which is acting as a coordination authority. The coordination authority announces when the assessment programme is available for public hearing, requests statements and guides assessment work by means of its own statements. The project and assessment programme will also be presented at public events.

Information on the transmission line project's impact on people and the environment will be gathered in an assessment report. The assessment report is expected to be completed in summer 2016.
