Price coupling successfully introduced on the electricity markets of northwestern Europe on February 4, 2014

Price coupling was introduced on the day-ahead markets, or spot markets, of northwestern Europe (NWE) on February 4, 2014. The procedure means calculating the price for electricity in the entire area for each hour of the next day simultaneously, taking into account all purchase and sales offers and transfer capacities.

The arrangement covers the Nordic countries, Baltic region, Germany, France, Benelux countries and Great Britain. The electricity exchanges and main grid companies in the area have been preparing the price coupling since 2010. It is to be expanded to other European countries in the next few years.
