Fingrid and ABB sign contract on Kuolajärvi substation

On Monday 11 August 2014, Fingrid Oyj and ABB Oy, Power Systems signed a contract concerning the construction of the new 220 kV substation in Kuolajärvi. The substation will be located in Kittilä close to the Sodankylä border. The Kuolavaara-Keulakkopää wind farm will be connected to the substation with its very own power line and will have an installed power of approximately 50 MVA. The contract will see the 220 kV Isoniemi-Vajukoski power line turned to run via the substation.

Once complete, the substation will be Finland's first 220 kV gas-insulated switchgear and will also be the first substation constructed by Fingrid purely for wind power connection.

The value of the signed contract is approximately EUR 4.6 million.

The invitation to tender gave the opportunity to place offers on gas-insulated switchgear or air-insulated switchgear.  Based on technical and financial evaluation, the GIS solution. Since the area required for GIS is far smaller than that required for AIS, the advantages of GIS include significantly less impact on the environment.

The contractor shall begin the work required by the project immediately, and the substation will be taken into use in September 2015.
