Fingrid invests in substations

Fingrid will build a new substation in Naantali in South-Western Finland and renew the Petäjäskoski substation in Northern Finland. Both capital investment decisions are related to major transmission line projects and to the sizeable capital investment programme concerning the Finnish electricity transmission grid.

The renewal of the Petäjäskoski substation is part of the development plan for the transmission grid in Lapland. The reform covers the renewal of the existing 220 kilovolt switchgear, which has become aged and impractical, and the addition of another 400/220 kilovolt transformer.

The upgrade is carried out so as to improve system security in the transmission system in Lapland, because the transmission grid in the region is changing, and the Petäjäskoski substation is an important node in the grid in Northern Finland. Electricity consumption in the region has grown rapidly as a result of tourism and housing, and energy consumption by the mining industry is also on the increase.

The total costs of the substation renewal project are approx. 16 million euros. The revised substation will be completed in 2015.

Kraftnät Åland to build a submarine cable from the Åland Islands to mainland Finland

The new 110 kilovolt substation in Naantali will enable the connection of a new high-voltage direct current submarine cable between the Åland Islands and mainland Finland to the Finnish grid. The substation will replace the existing 110 kilovolt switchgear at the Naantali power plant. This switchgear is aged and no longer fulfils the system security requirements.

The Naantali substation will be built approx. 1 kilometre away from the present substation beside an existing right-of-way. The facility reservations of the substation have taken into account the future increase in electricity production and consumption in the Turku region. The acquired substation site of 11.2 hectares also allows the construction of 400 kilovolt switchgear, main transformers and reactor plant in the future. The total costs of the project are approx. 9 million euros.

The construction of the substation will begin in the spring of 2013, and it will be completed in 2015 parallel with Kraftnät Åland’s converter station built on the adjacent site. Kraftnät Åland Ab, the transmission system operator on the Åland Islands, will build a submarine cable connection to mainland Finland. The cable will be ready at the end of 2015. The transmission connection will be connected to Fingrid’s grid in Naantali.
