Repair of cable fault in Fenno-Skan 2 direct current connection making progress

The repair of the Fenno-Skan 2 submarine cable has been progressing advantageously. The making of cable splicing on the deck of the vessel used for the repair work is in progress now. This work stage requires that the waves remain sufficiently calm and that the vessel can be kept in place on the waves. If the weather conditions in the sea area remain favourable and the commissioning tests following the repair of the cable are successful, the cable can be brought into service for use by the electricity market at the end of April.

There was a failure in the Fenno-Skan 2 submarine cable on 17 February as a result of damage caused by a ship’s anchor. The cable fault has been reflected in Finland as clearly higher area prices of electricity than in the other Nordic countries. Due to the good Nordic water reservoir situation, inexpensive Nordic electricity could have been bought to Finland, but the available transmission capacity has not enabled the transmission of all available electricity to Finland.
