Fingrid signed agreements on the maintenance of operational and disturbance reserves for the power system, maintained at power plants

Fingrid Oyj, which is responsible for the main electricity transmission grid in Finland, has signed agreements with 13 parties concerning reserves which are maintained at power plants and which are activated automatically when the frequency of the electricity grid differs from the normal value of 50 hertz (Hz).The total volume of these reserves maintained primarily at hydropower plants is approx. 600 megawatts (MW). The agreements will be valid from 2005 to 2010. The reserves are used for the momentary balancing of production and consumption in the power system and for managing various types of disturbance situations. The Nordic transmission system operators have agreed on the volume of reserves to be maintained in each Nordic country. Fingrid is responsible for acquiring the reserves in Finland. Earlier in 2004, Fingrid signed agreements with 7 industrial enterprises operating in the wood-processing, chemical and metal industries on so-called disconnectable loads to be used as disturbance reserve in the power system, e.q. during failure at a major power plant. The total power covered by these agreements is approx. 1,000 megawatts, and they will be valid from 2005 to 2015. Further information:
