Environmental Impact Assessment programmes launched for grid reinforcements relating to the nuclear power decision
Fingrid Oyj, which is responsible for the main electricity transmission grid in Finland, is launching the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) programmes concerning the line routes of three 400 kilovolt (kV) electricity transmission lines. Assessments relating to the grid reinforcements required by the recent nuclear power decision in Finland will be drawn up for transmission lines Loviisa – Hikiä in Hausjärvi (110 km) and Olkiluoto – Huittinen (70 km). Moreover, an assessment will be drawn up for a transmission line between Ulvila and Kangasala (120 km). There will be a need for this line in the future irrespective of the nuclear power decision, but the timing of the project may be influenced by the nuclear power solution made. This also applies to the transmission line from Yllikkälä situated near Lappeenranta to Huutokoski in Varkaus (150 km). The EIA of this line has been drawn up earlier.
The objective is to locate new transmission lines primarily by utilising existing rights-of-ways. This is also the starting point in the Government decision concerning national land use goals.
