Fingrid is responsible for electricity transmission in Finland’s main grid, the backbone electricity transmission network. Large electricity production plants, distribution system operators and heavy industry are connected to the main grid, which comprises more than 14,500 kilometres of 400-, 220- and 110-kilovolt transmission lines, numerous substations, and the reserve power plants that are required in the event of serious disruptions. Fingrid owns the main grid and, together with Finland’s neighbouring countries, also the main grid's international connections. The power system of Finland is part of a joint Nordic power system connected to the Central European system with DC connections.

The principles for planning and developing the main grid are customer needs, promoting the functionality of the electricity market, maintaining system security, ensuring sufficient transmission capacity, cost-effectiveness and managing an ageing network. The grid is developed over the long term in a manner that provides technical and economic optimisation while simultaneously ensuring future operating conditions.

Fingrid publishes open data on Finland's electricity system and electricity markets. This open data consists of content and data in digital format that anyone can freely use and share at no cost. Providing easy access to summarised data enables the development of new services and applications, and is a cost-effective way of improving efficiency in the electricity market.

Fingrid's website contains a wealth of information about the electricity system and electricity markets, including real-time data on the status of the electricity system that is updated every three minutes.

Fingrid also has its own open data website. The service provides powerful search functions for finding and browsing datasets. You can perform limited searches on individual datasets via a separate user interface and save the results in either CSV or XML format for further processing. Data can also be downloaded in machine-readable format via an open RESTful API. The application programming interface enables and facilitates the development of data-based services.

Fingrid is Finland’s transmission system operator. We are developing the main grid and electricity market to mitigate climate change and achieve Finland’s climate objectives.

Our customers are electricity producers, network operators, major consumers of electricity, and other electricity market operators. Distribution system operators distribute electricity from the main grid to households and other consumption facilities.

Transmission system operators play a special role both in Finland and abroad. They have been given responsibility for the development and operation of the electricity system, which is essential to society. They are strictly regulated monopolies. Together, the Finnish State and the National Emergency Supply Agency own more than half of Fingrid. Other owners include pension and insurance companies and other institutional investors.

We regularly report on current issues, both on our website and in the media. You can also follow Fingrid by subscribing to our newsletter and stakeholder magazine, and reading our online magazine. You can subscribe to both of these, as well as our printed brochures, on these pages. For example, we produce printed brochures for landowners about transmission line projects and living next to transmission lines. These pages also contain Fingrid's brand guidelines and instructions on how to use the company’s logo.
