Winter period commenced in the maintaining of peak load capacity from 1.12.2017

As the winter period begins 1 December, the units participating in the maintaining of peak load capacity will be shifted over to the starting readiness of a maximum of 12 hours. The starting readiness of a maximum of 12 hours will stand to 28 February, 2018.

The system includes following power plants:

• Naantali 1 power plant, 110 MW (coal) owned by Turun Seudun Energiantuotanto Oy
• Naistenlahti 1 power plant, 129 MW (natural gas) owned by Tampereen Energiantuotanto Oy
• Meri-Pori power plant (share) 308 MW (coal) owned by Fortum Power and Heat Oy
• Haapavesi power plant, 160 MW (heavy fuel oil) owned by Kanteleen Voima Oy

The demand response consumption units are:

• Suomenoja heat pump: 10 MW owned by Fortum Power and Heat Oy
• Katri Vala heat pump: 12 MW owned by Helen Oy

Peak load reserve power plants are bid in a single bid to the day-ahead market by Fingrid. The bid is priced at the cap price of the day-ahead market, 3 000 €/MWh. The bid is valid for hours 05-01 Finnish time (CET 04-24). Bid volume for first hour is the sum of minimum power of the power plants and the volume increases according to power plant’s ramping speed. Activation of peak load production capacity on day-ahead market in Finland and Sweden is informed by the following piece of news at Nord Pool.

Demand response consumption units participates to the peak load arrangement via balancing power market during the winter period. The bid is priced minimum at the cap price of the day ahead market, 3 000 €/MW.
 
Peak load reserve activations are paid to suppliers cost based. Revenue from activation decreases peak load reserve payments collected consumption connected to transmission grid.
In case Swedish or Finnish peak load capacity is activated, market information will be published both at power exchange Nord Pool's and Fingrid's web pages. The activated Finnish peak load reserve volume is shown real-time at State of power system at Fingrid's web pages.
 
For the power plants these peak load capacity agreements will be valid until 30 June 2020. For the demand response consumption units the agreements will be applied for each winter period and till the end of the winter period 2019-2020. After the winter period starting readiness for power plants will be maximum of one month.
