Fingrid renewing the Alajärvi substation in OstrobothniaFingrid Oyj, which is responsible for the main electricity transmission grid in Finland, will modernise its substation located in Alajärvi in Ostrobothnia. Earth moving work within the substation area has already started. The modernisation which will secure and improve electricity transmission in Ostrobothnia and between southern and northern Finland will be ready in June 2003. The Alajärvi substation was built in the 1970s and 1980s. The modernisation to be carried out now will not extend the substation area. The renewed units include a 400 MVA main transformer and the busbar system of the station. The new main transformer will require the building of two new switching bays.
Earthwork commenced at the substation at the end of April. The new transformer will be installed in September. The modernised substation will be commissioned in stages, and it will be in full use in June 2003. There will be more frequent truck and machinery traffic within the area than normal.
The total budget of the project is approx. EUR 7 million. The main contractor is Fortum Service Oy, with Eltel Networks Keski Oy serving as its subcontractor and being responsible for building and transmission line work. The new main transformer will be supplied by ABB in Sweden and the reactors by Nokian Capacitors Oy.
