Preparations for the Repair Work of the EstLink 2 Electricity Transmission Connection
Preparations for the repair work of the EstLink 2 electricity transmission connection between Finland and Estonia, which was damaged on Christmas Day, are progressing. Preliminary work for the repair will be carried out at sea over the next few weeks.
In the coming weeks, the damaged submarine cable of the EstLink 2 connection will be prepared for repair work. The preparatory measures will reduce the risks associated with the repair work and refine the details of the actual repair plan.
"Over the next few weeks, the damaged section of the cable will be excavated and cut out at sea. The remaining sections of the cable will be tested for integrity and then lowered back to the seabed, sealed, to await final repair. The work being done now will shorten the duration of the actual repair work, as some of the tasks can be completed in advance," says Kimmo Nepola, head of the unit responsible for submarine cables.
The EstLink 2 connection failed on Christmas Day and has been out of service since then. The extent of the damage was assessed, and repair planning began immediately after the damage. The repair work is being advanced in daily cooperation with the cable manufacturer, and the actual repair work is expected to take four to six weeks. Further information on the progress of the repair work will be provided once the start date of the work is confirmed.
According to the current repair schedule, the connection would be restored at the beginning of August.
