Fingrid to postpone planned trading on the intraday markets related to polarity reversals of interconnectors
Fingrig has previously announced the intention to reduce the number of occasions when the flows on the high voltage direct current transmission interconnectors reverse direction by trading on the intraday markets. The change was supposed to take effect in 18.3.2025. This schedule will be revised.
Fingrid has previously announced the intention to reduce the number of occasions when the flows on the high voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnectors reverse direction by trading on the intraday markets. The change was supposed to take effect in 18.3.2025. This schedule will be revised, as there is a continued need for Svenska kraftnät’s system development for the trading to be carried out. Fingrid will also revise the corresponding timetable.
When the necessary development is complete, Svenska kraftnät and Fingrid will communicate a date for the start of counter trading on the intraday market that is applied to reducing the HVDC interconnector polarity reversals.
Background
Too many reversals of the flow of electricity may cause wear and tear and shorten the life of the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnectors such as Fenno-Skan, connecting Finland with Central Sweden.
In order to limit the wear and tear, Fingrid will trade on the intraday markets to reduce the number of flow direction changes aka. polarity reversals on Fenno-Skan. The process for handling the polarity reversals with countertrade was developed together with Svenska kraftnät, the Swedish transmission network operator that will also trade on the intraday market in their bidding zones.
The transmission system operators restrict the intraday capacity before the countertrading, to avoid trade flows in the opposite direction. Fingrid trades the needed volume on the intraday markets. If necessary, after the intraday market trading gate closure, Fingrid can fill the remaining needs during delivery with the existing operating models, i.e., special regulation from the balancing electricity market and competitive bilateral trades.
