Fingrid magazine 1/2025: Municipalities play a crucial role in enabling the energy transition
The first Fingrid customer magazine of the year has been published. The overarching theme of this issue is the expansion of the electricity grid and the development of connectivity at the local level.
In the editorial to Fingrid magazine 1/2025, Fingrid CEO Asta Sihvonen-Punkka writes that municipalities play a crucial role in enabling the energy transition and the investments needed for it, as they are responsible for planning and the necessary permits.
“Network construction takes 7–8 years on average, which is why it is crucial to contact the network operator early. Proximity to electricity grids is a competitive advantage when looking for a location for production and industrial investments,” Sihvonen-Punkka writes.
The main article in the magazine discusses the basics of building new transmission lines. Right now, there are many more enquiries for connection to the main grid than can be realised, and Fingrid Senior Vice President Jussi Jyrinsalo says that the main grid and its connections are built where the project permits are in order and construction can begin.
Among Fingrid’s customers interviewed for the article, Arto Nieminen, CEO of Järvi-Suomen Energia located in Eastern Finland, states that expanding the main grid is not the only solution, rather investments are also needed in distribution and regional networks. Tomi Toivonen, CEO of Turku Energia Sähköverkot, says the same. Fingrid plans a connection to Raisio in 2031 and, according to Toivonen, it could offer Turku a solution to increasing demand.
Some of the other articles in issue 1/2025 of the Fingrid magazine:
- Data centres want to be in Finland
- Increasing demand for green financing
- News from the Estonian transmission system operator Elering
- The long road of an ester oil transformer to a substation
