Supply security of electricity

Fingrid is to deliver the electricity produced by power plants connected to the national grid to Fingrid's customers reliably and with good quality. Fingrid also exports and imports power with the neighbouring countries. The supply security of electricity is maintained continuously. The indicators monitored include the number and duration of outages.

The transmission grid is planned and operated so that no individual fault leads to an escalating disturbance which influences the entire transmission grid.

Transmission reliability in the Finnish national grid in 2017

Transmission reliability in the national grid in 2017 remained at a very good level. It was 99.99969 %.

The volume of electricity not transmitted totalled 211 megawatt hours (143 MWh) (the average figures for 2007–2016 are given in parentheses). The electricity not transmitted corresponded to 3.1 MWh (2.1 MWh) per each terawatt hour (TWh) transmitted in Fingrid’s grid.

The key figure "system minute" often used in international comparisons to describe transmission reliability had a value of 0.89 (0.59) min. A system minute refers to the interruption of all transmission for one minute compared to the annual peak demand of the system.

The number of forced interruptions (over 30 sec) per connection point was record-low 0.068 (0.236), and the average outage duration was 2.23 minutes (3.25 min). There were only 173 disturbances (275), of which 140 (157) were caused by thunder or other natural phenomena.
