Guarantee of origin of electricity

The promotion of electricity generated from renewable energy sources calls for the implementation of a guarantee system for the origin of electricity. The member states of the European Union must create a system in which electricity production based on renewable energy sources can be verified reliably.

Renewable energy refers to wind, solar, geothermic, wave and tidal energy as well as energy produced from hydropower, biomass, landfill gases, sewage treatment plant gases and biogases. The guarantee of the origin of electricity covers production based on the above sources of energy, and that proportion of production in power plants also firing other fuels which is produced from renewable energy.

At the request of the owner of the particular power plant, Fingrid issues the guarantee of origin for the production of renewable energy in accordance with the relevant Act and Decree applied in Finland. The guarantee of origin is issued either in paper format or electronically. Issuing the guarantee of origin requires that an accepted production registrar has verified the power plant, that there is a service agreement with Fingrid, and that the production information is delivered to Fingrid.
